Edo State House Of Assembly Revokes State Audit Law, Adopts Proposed Business Calendar

The state audit law of 2019 was repealed today by the Edo State House of Assembly, which also established the Edo State Audit Service Commission and the position of the auditor general for state and local governments.

During their discussion, Rt. Hon. Henry Okhuarobo, the majority leader, stated that the purpose of the bill is to effectively control public expenditure through an audit system led by the auditor general.

The purpose of the bill’s change, according to Chief Whip Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Okoduwa, is to bring it into compliance with worldwide best practices for state spending oversight.

Rt. Hon. Francis Okiye, the member for the Esan North East One constituency, stated that after following all required parliamentary procedures to enact the bill into law, including holding a public hearing to discuss the Bill is expedient.

A commission for the auditor general will be established as part of the Bill, according to Deputy Speaker Rt. Hon. Roland Asoro, to address issues with the previous bill and serve as a check and balance on government spending. Meanwhile, member representing Orhionmwon East, Rt. Hon. Nosayaba Okunbor, stated that while no establishment can operate without accountability, the Bill will strengthen policies as they relate to accountability.

After suspending pertinent rules, the House resolved into a committee of the whole to evaluate the Bill’s enactment, citation, creation of the audit service commission, composition, and other sections in sections.
